How Body Builder works
What is in it, how much to give, what owners see and what to check if you compete.
What’s in it
What gamma-oryzanol is
Gamma-oryzanol is a compound found in rice bran oil. Because Body Builder is a liquid, you give it by oral syringe or pour it over the grain: no powder to mix and nothing left in the bucket.
Body Builder is rice bran oil made into a liquid emulsion, and rice bran oil carries gamma-oryzanol. Gamma-oryzanol dissolves in fat, not water, so Arnold Epstein, the pharmacist and horseman who created the formula, kept it in an oil base. One measured tablespoon a day, given by syringe at the back of the mouth, gets the whole dose into the horse.
Muscle and topline
Owners look for fuller muscle along the back and over the hindquarters, in horses in steady work.
Condition
Hard keepers, older horses and horses in training holding their weight through work and travel.
Coat
A softer, shinier coat, often with dapples: the change many owners notice first.
What “supports muscle, topline and coat” means: what owners look for with steady feeding and regular work. Not a promise: every horse is different.
The original
Created by a pharmacist who raced his own horses
Equiade was founded in 1984 by Arnold Epstein, a pharmacist from Merrick, New York, who owned and raced horses. He spent two years working out a rice bran oil emulsion with gamma-oryzanol, and that became Body Builder in 1986. Dr. Ernest Pecoraro bought the company in 2005 and still runs it from Clearwater, Florida, where every bottle of Body Builder is made.

Feeding guide
One tablespoon a day for most horses
How much to give, how to give it and how long a 32 oz bottle lasts.
-
Shake well
It is an emulsion, so give the bottle a good shake before each dose.
-
Draw up one tablespoon
15 mL in an oral syringe for a horse over 400 lb. Smaller horses take less (see the table).
-
Give it at the back of the mouth
Slide the syringe in at the corner of the mouth, where there are no teeth, and push slowly.
-
Or pour it over the grain
If your horse will not take a syringe, top-dress the feed. Don't stir it in: the oil clings to the bucket and your horse misses part of the dose.
| Body weight | Daily amount |
|---|---|
| 200 to 400 lb (ponies, minis, young stock) | 10 mL2 teaspoons |
| Over 400 lb (most horses) | 15 mL1 tablespoon |
Starting out
You may double the amount for the first few weeks. For a sale, start at least three months ahead.
Storage
Store at room temperature and protect from freezing. Keep the cap tightly closed, and keep the bottle out of reach of children and other animals. A bottle keeps for 3 years from manufacture; the date is printed on the bottom.
Work out your own barn. The feeding calculator on the Body Builder page works out how many bottles you need, for any number of horses.
Dosing syringe. Measures the daily 15 mL and puts it at the back of the mouth, with none left in the bucket. Exel Cath Tip, 35 mL, one per pack.

What to expect
What owners tell us
With steady feeding and regular work. Every horse is different.
Weeks 1 to 2
Early signs
Some owners notice changes within the first couple of weeks, often in the coat.
Weeks 3 to 4
Often the first visible change
Dr. Pecoraro says owners usually see a difference in three to four weeks. Owner reviews put it at about four weeks.
Month 2
Condition and topline
With steady feeding and regular work, owners report fuller condition and topline. Give it a full bottle before you judge.
Month 3
Thin horses and sales
A very thin horse can take about three months. For a sale, start at least three months ahead.
These are what owners tell us, not a promise. Every horse is different: age, health, feed, work and turnout matter as much as any supplement.

How it compares
Why a liquid instead of a powder
Body Builder is a measured tablespoon you give by syringe. Here is how it sits next to the other ways to feed for muscle and condition.

FAQ
Questions owners ask
From reviews, from the phone and from Dr. Pecoraro’s own answers.
Body Builder
A liquid emulsion of rice bran oil that contains gamma-oryzanol, a compound found in rice bran oil. It is a daily supplement for horses, made by Equiade in Clearwater, Florida. The full ingredient list is printed on every bottle.
Because the gamma-oryzanol comes from the rice bran oil. The ingredient panel lists rice bran oil as the active ingredient, and the front of the bottle says it contains gamma-oryzanol. Want the panel for your vet? Call us at 1-800-413-3702 and we will send it.
Plain rice bran oil is a fat supplement, fed by the ounce for calories. Body Builder is a measured daily dose, one tablespoon of an emulsion made to Arnold Epstein's formula, and horses take it readily from a syringe. Some owners who switched from cheaper oils tell us they did not get the same results. Compare Body Builder with powders and fats.
It is the original: created by a pharmacist who raced his own horses, and relied on by trainers, breeders and owners for 40 years. It is a liquid you give by syringe, not another powder to stir into the feed, and every bottle of Body Builder is made in Clearwater, Florida.
One 32 oz bottle feeds one horse for about 60 days, which works out at about $1.12 a day, or $1.06 with Subscribe & Save. Most owners who mention the price in their reviews say it is worth it.
Owners usually tell us they see a difference in three to four weeks, and some notice changes within the first couple of weeks. A very thin horse can take about three months. Age, health, feed and work all play a part. Give it a full bottle, about two months, before you judge. What owners report, week by week.
Most often a fuller topline, more muscle over the back and hindquarters, and a softer, shinier coat, often with dapples. Owners of hard keepers tell us their horses hold their condition. These are what owners report, not a promise: feed, work and turnout matter as much as any supplement.
Not every horse responds the same way. Owners who see the most change feed it alongside enough calories and protein and keep the horse in regular work.
Dogs have their own version. Body Builder Dog is made for show, working and sporting dogs, with dog amounts on the label. See Body Builder Dog.
Feeding and safety
The label gives 2 teaspoons (10 mL) a day for 200 to 400 lb (ponies, minis, young stock) and 1 tablespoon (15 mL) a day for over 400 lb (most horses). You may double the amount for the first few weeks. For a sale, start at least three months ahead. See the dosing table.
One tablespoon (15 mL) a day for a horse over 400 lb. The best way is an oral syringe at the back of the mouth. If your horse won't take a syringe, pour it over the grain. Don't stir it into the feed, because the oil sticks to the bucket and your horse misses part of the dose.
Most horses take it readily: owners tell us it smells like cake batter, and many horses take it right out of the syringe. If yours won’t, pour it over the grain instead. Don’t stir it in, or part of the dose stays on the bucket.
One 32 oz bottle lasts one horse about 60 days at one tablespoon a day, two horses about 30 days and five horses about 12 days. Bottles for 1, 2, 5 and 12 horses.
At least three months before. For weanlings, start at 5 mL a day for a few days, then 10 mL, and 15 mL after the first month. If a yearling sale is less than two months away, Dr. Pecoraro's guidance is 20 to 30 mL a day for the first 10 days, then the daily amount.
Yes. Body Builder is a daily supplement, not a replacement for a good ration, and owners give it alongside their usual feed and supplements. If your horse is on a program from your vet, show your vet the label first.
Owners who mention it mostly say the opposite: their horses stay calm and focused in work. Body Builder is a measured tablespoon of an oil emulsion, not a high-starch feed. Every horse is different, so watch yours for the first few weeks and call us if you have questions.
Follow the label. Body Builder is not meant to replace a good daily ration, and if your horse has a health problem, ask your vet before you start. Watch your horse for the first few weeks, and call us at 1-800-413-3702 with any question.
The label says safe use in pregnant animals or animals intended for breeding has not been established. Ask your vet first.
Store at room temperature and protect from freezing. Keep the cap tightly closed, and keep the bottle out of reach of children and other animals. A bottle keeps for 3 years from manufacture; the date is printed on the bottom. Shake well before each dose: it is an emulsion.
Competition
Every bottle lists its full ingredients. Competing? Check the ingredient list against your governing body's rules (FEI, USEF or your racing commission) before you start.
